Besserwisser debuts on Woodwork with five solid hardware techno jams accompanied by a pensive and textured ambient piece.
Opening with 'veit það all', a spacious atmosphere is established, evoking the experience of hearing the first track of the evening, warming up the PA inside an empty warehouse. The seeds of early techno pop are uncovered as each cycling analog motif unravels, dynamically building the track.
Next up, 'betweter' brandishes some darker melodic lines and warm, edgy synth tones, constructing a stark minimal-wave energy with a tinge of acid. Bessewisser gradually builds with some underlying sequences and analog percussion that peaks in the final moments.
The obvious centerpiece is 'shittakaburi'... a deep, layered synthscape with airy, filtered strings and a series of interconnected gyratiing monophonic lines intertwined. A few well-placed pauses create delicate moments of anticipation, satisfied with each re-entry of the chunky main groove and hypnotic bass line.
A faster paced 'sciu ĉion' kicks off with a very minimal structure that allows the space to highlight some nuanced analog drum machine work. The syncopated percussion accents are treated nicely to silky analog echoes and reverb tails, saying much more with less.
A flawless retro new wave sound space is revealed in 'sciu ĉion'. Some menacing undertones in the sizzling bass synth are paired with lush, emotional top lines, with only the most subtle variations creating movement in the rhythm patterns.
The closing ambient piece, 'atodaso' is deeply textured, from the opening atonal drones and emerging dark arpeggiator sequencce, widening gradually with strange breathing synths fx and an expanse of blazing pads. Besserwisser establishes a striking sonic presence in this collection that nods to its influences while setting a unique and genuine trajectory for future exploration.
